Choosing the Right Skip Size for Your Project

By Skip Hire

Here at KCM Waste Management, we offer a variety of skip sizes, from a 3 tonne all the way up to a 40-yard roll on roll off.

To decide which size skip you need, you need to have a good estimate of how much waste your project will be producing.

Our Skip Sizes

Selecting the right size skip for your waste is crucial in ensuring you aren’t wasting money on your skip! Take a look at our guide below to help choose which size skip would be best suited:

3 Tonne or 4 Tonne Skip Sizes:

For small amounts of waste, you would need to look at around a 3 tonne or 4 tonne.

A 3 tonne skip can hold between 25-35 black bin bags and a 4 tonne can hold 30-40 bin bags.

This size is most suited for small home projects or garden renovations.

6 Tonne or 8 Tonne Skip Sizes:

For a larger amount or for builder’s rubble, we would recommend a 6 tonne or 8 tonne.

These are most commonly used for construction projects or larger home projects.

A 6 tonne skip can hold 50-60 bin bags and an 8 tonne will hold 60-80 bin bags.

12 Yard, 14 Yard, or 16 Yard Skip Sizes:

Our larger skip sizes include 12 yard, 14 yard and 16 yard. These can be best suited for larger garden renovations or refurbishment projects like shop fitting. A 12 yard skip holds 100-120 bin bags, a 14 yard would hold 120-140 bin bags, and a 16 yard 140-160 bin bags.

The next size up from this would be a roll on roll off skip bin which is suitable for bulky waste or very large amounts. These range from a 20 yard to a 40 yard.

Roll on roll offs are best suited to industrial or commercial waste removal projects, they are heavy-duty skip bins and can hold up to 440 bin bags.

Considering Your Skip Location

To hire a skip you must ensure you have the space to have this on site.

If your skip is going to be placed on private land such as a driveway or front garden, then we can drop this off for you without requiring a council permit.

If you need to have your skip left on public land, such as a road outside your house, you will require a council permit. Here at KCM, we arrange all of this for you so that once you have booked your skip, you don’t have the hassle of trying to acquire a permit yourself! It will all be arranged and ready for your delivery date.

We would recommend allowing at least 9 foot of width for our skip lorries to be able to deliver your skip safely!

Choosing the Best Aggregates in South Yorkshire

By Aggregates

Whatever your project; from landscaping to building an extension or laying a driveway, you need to ensure you’re using the best aggregates in South Yorkshire.

Good aggregates are fundamental to a construction job being done well and lasting the test of time. Therefore, it makes sense to do a bit of research and ensure you’ve got the materials you need.

At KCM Waste Management, we’re experts in aggregates. In this blog post, we provide guidance on choosing the best aggregates in South Yorkshire for your construction job:

Why Do I Need the Best Aggregates?

The primary use of aggregates is to provide strength and a level of robustness to a construction project. Aggregates also help to distribute load, for example when used for roads and railways, and to provide ample drainage in landscape-based projects.

Aggregates are an essential element of making concrete and mortar, too. They’re typically mixed with cement, bitumen or gypsum, helping to give stability, as well as resistance to wear and erosion.

As such a fundamental part of your construction project, it’s important that you choose the best aggregates you can find, and that most meet your requirements.

What Types of Aggregates Are There?

The types of aggregates you need will depend on the project.

KCM’s large range of aggregates in South Yorkshire cover most needs and include:

  • Topsoil: Our affordable topsoil is ideal for flower beds and has great drainage properties.
  • Building sand: We provide a range of building sand types, including washed concrete sand, dry screen building sands, and recycled gritty sand. These are used by many construction companies in and around South Yorkshire for jobs like laying paving slabs and creating concrete.
  • Type 1 sub base: Our MOT Type 1 Clause 803 and Type 1 Reduced Fines (MOT Type 3) sub-bases are perfect for creating durable load-bearing bases, and provide great drainage and prevent settlement.
  • Gravels: We provide a choice of gravel for both large construction projects and domestic use in South Yorkshire. Our gravels include chalk, flint, quartz, and washed gravel, to help you get the look or finish you need.

How Do I Choose the Best Aggregates?

In order to know that you’re choosing the best aggregates in South Yorkshire that meet your needs, firstly consider what you need the aggregates to do.

If you need decorative aggregates, maybe for driveways, choose from KCM’s range of gravels. These are perfect for decorative purposes and are hard wearing, look great, and are cost-effective.

For aggregates required in building, choose our building sand. You can use this for laying basic paving slabs, and for creating mortar in building projects.

When you need a tough, load-bearing base, go for KCM’s Type 1 sub base. As well as a base for patios, driveways, and more, it can be used as a filling product.

You can also use aggregates for pipe bedding. For this purpose, we provide limestone, gritstone, and washed recycled stone all perfect for pipe bedding.

When you’re creating flower beds and need ample drainage, our topsoil will fit the bill. It’s also perfect for repairing lawn damage.

If you need guidance on what the best aggregates are for your project, speak to the experienced team at KCM.

Once you know which aggregate is best for your project, consider the aggregates suppliers near you, taking into account price, availability, the amount you need, the supplier’s expertise, and their ability to deliver your aggregates when you need them.

Who Supplies the Best Aggregates in South Yorkshire?

To be a reputable aggregates supplier, a company needs to be fully licensed with suitable certifications. The best aggregates companies will be ISO9001 accredited, to confirm that their quality systems have been approved.

They should also be ISO14001 accredited to confirm that their environmental management systems have been assessed.

The best aggregates supplier will also have suitable aggregates, soils, and tipping vehicles, whatever the size of the job.

KCM Aggregates cover all of South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Humberside, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, and aim to provide the best aggregates for your construction project at the best price. We’re also fully licensed with decades of expertise in the industry and a vast number of 5* customer reviews.

glass recycling

5 Benefits of Commercial Glass Recycling

By Trade Waste

We all know disposing of glass can not only be expensive for your business, but it can also be a health and safety hazard too. Glass waste can be difficult to dispose of in your general waste bin and bulky to store on site. That’s where commercial glass recycling comes in.

Here at KCM, we provide a comprehensive glass recycling service, ensuring your disposal is more affordable and efficient.

Glass waste is produced by a wide variety of businesses, but do you know how or why commercial glass recycling is so important? Here are our 5 top reasons:

1) Glass Is Perpetually Recyclable

Glass is one of the few materials which is perpetually recyclable. This means it can be recycled again and again without any reductions to the purity or quality of the glass.

When glass is recycled and melted down, it can be made into new items. Some of these items include drinking glasses and glass fiber. Once your glass is at the recycling plant, it will be cleaned and crushed before being melted and shaped into new bottles and jars of any shape or size.

If you were to not recycle your glass waste, it would take 1 million years for this to decompose in landfill. All the while littering our eco-system.

2) It Can Easily Be Recycled into Something New

We accept and recycle a mixture of glass waste. Including bottles, jars, and glassware. The vast majority of our glass waste is sent to our local partners, Beatson Clark. It is then crushed, melted, and molded into new products.

Recycling is inevitably a priority to your customers and stakeholders, too. So knowing your glass waste is being made into new glass bottles instead of sat in a landfill site also benefits your reputation and company image.

3) Glass Recycling Will Save You Money

It is actually cheaper to recycle your glass!

As the price of landfill tax grows more expensive due to the constraints on landfills in the UK, so does the cost of disposing of your general waste.

There has never been more of a focus on being environmentally conscientious and as we continue to struggle with the amount of waste being sent to landfills. Landfill tax will always increase, meaning recycling your waste has never been cheaper.

4) Glass Recycling Is Great for The Environment

Not only is recycling your commercial glass waste a cost effective waste solution for your business. But by recycling your waste glass instead of creating more from raw materials, we are using far less energy. Therefore, reducing the carbon footprint of our business too.

Recycling glass has the same equivalent effect as removing 120,000 cars from the road in terms of reducing CO2 emissions.

Every 1000 tonnes of recycled glass that gets melted down saves 314 tonnes of CO2!

Air pollution is also positively affected by glass recycling as it is reduced by 20% and water pollution by a massive 50%.

5) Glass Recycling Protects Our Countryside

Glass recycling conserves our countryside as it reduces the need to quarry more raw materials. By recycling instead of creating new glass, we save on the usage of materials such as sand, soda ash, limestone and colour additives. This in turn protects our landscapes and the natural habitats which exist all over the UK.

Each year 200,000 tonnes of glass is sent to landfill within the hospitality industry alone. This makes it all the more important to ensure that your glass waste is being disposed of responsibly.

A glass bottle you send to recycle can be re-made into a new product within 30 days. As glass is a primary material, your waste could be re-used to make an array of commercial use items such as bottles, jars, and tiles.

With KCM, it’s easy for you to recycle your commercial glass waste. You don’t have to segregate by colour or type. All glass waste collected will be brought back to our own recycling site in Rotherham. It will then be sorted and cleaned before being distributed to manufacturers to create new glass products.

We will provide you with the appropriate glass waste container for your site. We can arrange either weekly or ad-hoc collections, ensuring minimal disruption to your business.

We cover all areas surrounding Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Sheffield, Chesterfield and Worksop.
