Choosing the Right Bin Size for Your Business

By Trade Waste

Whether you are a new start-up or a long-standing business, it’s important to ensure you’re not overspending on your waste disposal service. KCM provides a wide range of commercial bin sizes as part of our trade waste disposal service to customers throughout South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire.

We design our flexible and tailored service specifically for your business requirements. This means you’re not paying for a bin that’s too big or collections that are too frequent!

No matter what industry your business is in, by law you are required to ensure your waste is not fly-tipped, which is the illegal dumping of waste to avoid disposal costs. You must also make sure your waste is securely contained on your premises so that it cannot be disrupted or made a nuisance for the local area.

Overfilled bins can mean your business incurs additional charges by either your waste management company or your local council. However, having bins too large for your needs means you will be overpaying for a service you don’t need!

Here at KCM, we are more than happy to conduct a site visit to ensure the bins you book for your site are suitable and cost-effective for your company.

Any waste disposal company you choose to work with must be licensed and properly authorised to dispose of your waste in a safe and legal manner. You must also keep evidence of how your waste is disposed of for any audits or council checks.

What Commercial Bin Sizes Are Available?

It is essential that you select the right sized bin for your business so that you don’t end up overpaying for your service!

Our bin containers are listed as follows:

General Waste Polystyrene Bag

45.5cm W x 99cm H

Dry Mixed Recycling Polystyrene Bag

How Do I Know Which Commerical Bins I Need?

First of all, you need to decide which waste streams you are going to be needing to dispose of.

Our main 4 waste streams are General Waste, Mixed Glass Recycling, Cardboard and Paper Recycling, and Confidential Waste.

You also need to consider whether you will need your bin emptied weekly or fortnightly. Usually, you should opt for a weekly collection so that your waste isn’t sat on-site and risking being tampered with.  However, if you do choose a fortnightly collection, you possibly won’t need as large a bin.

Smaller businesses will usually find they need a larger sized general waste bin and smaller for their next most common waste streams. It’s important that you regularly assess your waste needs so you don’t end up overpaying or incur additional charges.

As a new business just starting out, it can be useful to simply look at your competitors! A check as to how many bins they have and which waste streams they are producing can give you a good idea as to what you made need for your company.

If you are unsure which commercial bin sizes you will need, don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01709 794 888. We can then come out to your premises to price your service tailored for you.

Looking for A Business Glass Waste Collection?

Does your business produce glass waste? If so, you need to ensure your bin container is designed to collect this. Our glass bins are 240lt meaning that your bin will still be easy to maneuver, should you need to!

With KCM glass waste collections, you also have peace of mind knowing that we put your waste to good use. All of our glass is sent to our partners Beaton Clark, to be broken down and recycled into new glass bottles.

Where Should You Store Your Commercial Bins?

You should always store your bins securely on-site, but this can sometimes be difficult to manage. Some companies opt for a bin store if they have several bins on their site. Or you could opt for a lockable bin to ensure your waste is left un-tampered with.

Wherever you keep your bins on-site, you need to ensure you are able to move your waste easily and safely from your building out to the relevant bin.

different skip sizes

Choosing the Right Skip Size for Your Project

By Skip Hire

Here at KCM Waste Management, we offer a variety of skip sizes, from a 3 tonne all the way up to a 40-yard roll on roll off.

To decide which size skip you need, you need to have a good estimate of how much waste your project will be producing.

Our Skip Sizes

Selecting the right size skip for your waste is crucial in ensuring you aren’t wasting money on your skip! Take a look at our guide below to help choose which size skip would be best suited:

3 Tonne or 4 Tonne Skip Sizes:

For small amounts of waste, you would need to look at around a 3 tonne or 4 tonne.

A 3 tonne skip can hold between 25-35 black bin bags and a 4 tonne can hold 30-40 bin bags.

This size is most suited for small home projects or garden renovations.

6 Tonne or 8 Tonne Skip Sizes:

For a larger amount or for builder’s rubble, we would recommend a 6 tonne or 8 tonne.

These are most commonly used for construction projects or larger home projects.

A 6 tonne skip can hold 50-60 bin bags and an 8 tonne will hold 60-80 bin bags.

12 Yard, 14 Yard, or 16 Yard Skip Sizes:

Our larger skip sizes include 12 yard, 14 yard and 16 yard. These can be best suited for larger garden renovations or refurbishment projects like shop fitting. A 12 yard skip holds 100-120 bin bags, a 14 yard would hold 120-140 bin bags, and a 16 yard 140-160 bin bags.

The next size up from this would be a roll on roll off skip bin which is suitable for bulky waste or very large amounts. These range from a 20 yard to a 40 yard.

Roll on roll offs are best suited to industrial or commercial waste removal projects, they are heavy-duty skip bins and can hold up to 440 bin bags.

Considering Your Skip Location

To hire a skip you must ensure you have the space to have this on site.

If your skip is going to be placed on private land such as a driveway or front garden, then we can drop this off for you without requiring a council permit.

If you need to have your skip left on public land, such as a road outside your house, you will require a council permit. Here at KCM, we arrange all of this for you so that once you have booked your skip, you don’t have the hassle of trying to acquire a permit yourself! It will all be arranged and ready for your delivery date.

We would recommend allowing at least 9 foot of width for our skip lorries to be able to deliver your skip safely!

What Can I Put In A Skip?

All of the below items are acceptable to be placed in your KCM skip:

Choosing the Best Aggregates in South Yorkshire

By Aggregates

Whatever your project; from landscaping to building an extension or laying a driveway, you need to ensure you’re using the best aggregates in South Yorkshire.

Good aggregates are fundamental to a construction job being done well and lasting the test of time. Therefore, it makes sense to do a bit of research and ensure you’ve got the materials you need.

At KCM Waste Management, we’re experts in aggregates. In this blog post, we provide guidance on choosing the best aggregates in South Yorkshire for your construction job:

Why Do I Need the Best Aggregates?

The primary use of aggregates is to provide strength and a level of robustness to a construction project. Aggregates also help to distribute load, for example when used for roads and railways, and to provide ample drainage in landscape-based projects.

Aggregates are an essential element of making concrete and mortar, too. They’re typically mixed with cement, bitumen or gypsum, helping to give stability, as well as resistance to wear and erosion.

As such a fundamental part of your construction project, it’s important that you choose the best aggregates you can find, and that most meet your requirements.

What Types of Aggregates Are There?

The types of aggregates you need will depend on the project.

KCM’s large range of aggregates in South Yorkshire cover most needs and include:

  • Topsoil: Our affordable topsoil is ideal for flower beds and has great drainage properties.
  • Building sand: We provide a range of building sand types, including washed concrete sand, dry screen building sands, and recycled gritty sand. These are used by many construction companies in and around South Yorkshire for jobs like laying paving slabs and creating concrete.
  • Type 1 sub base: Our MOT Type 1 Clause 803 and Type 1 Reduced Fines (MOT Type 3) sub-bases are perfect for creating durable load-bearing bases, and provide great drainage and prevent settlement.
  • Gravels: We provide a choice of gravel for both large construction projects and domestic use in South Yorkshire. Our gravels include chalk, flint, quartz, and washed gravel, to help you get the look or finish you need.

How Do I Choose the Best Aggregates?

In order to know that you’re choosing the best aggregates in South Yorkshire that meet your needs, firstly consider what you need the aggregates to do.

If you need decorative aggregates, maybe for driveways, choose from KCM’s range of gravels. These are perfect for decorative purposes and are hard wearing, look great, and are cost-effective.

For aggregates required in building, choose our building sand. You can use this for laying basic paving slabs, and for creating mortar in building projects.

When you need a tough, load-bearing base, go for KCM’s Type 1 sub base. As well as a base for patios, driveways, and more, it can be used as a filling product.

You can also use aggregates for pipe bedding. For this purpose, we provide limestone, gritstone, and washed recycled stone all perfect for pipe bedding.

When you’re creating flower beds and need ample drainage, our topsoil will fit the bill. It’s also perfect for repairing lawn damage.

If you need guidance on what the best aggregates are for your project, speak to the experienced team at KCM.

Once you know which aggregate is best for your project, consider the aggregates suppliers near you, taking into account price, availability, the amount you need, the supplier’s expertise, and their ability to deliver your aggregates when you need them.

Who Supplies the Best Aggregates in South Yorkshire?

To be a reputable aggregates supplier, a company needs to be fully licensed with suitable certifications. The best aggregates companies will be ISO9001 accredited, to confirm that their quality systems have been approved.

They should also be ISO14001 accredited to confirm that their environmental management systems have been assessed.

The best aggregates supplier will also have suitable aggregates, soils, and tipping vehicles, whatever the size of the job.

KCM Aggregates cover all of South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Humberside, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, and aim to provide the best aggregates for your construction project at the best price. We’re also fully licensed with decades of expertise in the industry and a vast number of 5* customer reviews.

glass recycling

5 Benefits of Commercial Glass Recycling

By Trade Waste

We all know disposing of glass can not only be expensive for your business, but it can also be a health and safety hazard too. Glass waste can be difficult to dispose of in your general waste bin and bulky to store on site. That’s where commercial glass recycling comes in.

Here at KCM, we provide a comprehensive glass recycling service, ensuring your disposal is more affordable and efficient.

Glass waste is produced by a wide variety of businesses, but do you know how or why commercial glass recycling is so important? Here are our 5 top reasons:

1) Glass Is Perpetually Recyclable

Glass is one of the few materials which is perpetually recyclable. This means it can be recycled again and again without any reductions to the purity or quality of the glass.

When glass is recycled and melted down, it can be made into new items. Some of these items include drinking glasses and glass fiber. Once your glass is at the recycling plant, it will be cleaned and crushed before being melted and shaped into new bottles and jars of any shape or size.

If you were to not recycle your glass waste, it would take 1 million years for this to decompose in landfill. All the while littering our eco-system.

2) It Can Easily Be Recycled into Something New

We accept and recycle a mixture of glass waste. Including bottles, jars, and glassware. The vast majority of our glass waste is sent to our local partners, Beatson Clark. It is then crushed, melted, and molded into new products.

Recycling is inevitably a priority to your customers and stakeholders, too. So knowing your glass waste is being made into new glass bottles instead of sat in a landfill site also benefits your reputation and company image.

3) Glass Recycling Will Save You Money

It is actually cheaper to recycle your glass!

As the price of landfill tax grows more expensive due to the constraints on landfills in the UK, so does the cost of disposing of your general waste.

There has never been more of a focus on being environmentally conscientious and as we continue to struggle with the amount of waste being sent to landfills. Landfill tax will always increase, meaning recycling your waste has never been cheaper.

4) Glass Recycling Is Great for The Environment

Not only is recycling your commercial glass waste a cost effective waste solution for your business. But by recycling your waste glass instead of creating more from raw materials, we are using far less energy. Therefore, reducing the carbon footprint of our business too.

Recycling glass has the same equivalent effect as removing 120,000 cars from the road in terms of reducing CO2 emissions.

Every 1000 tonnes of recycled glass that gets melted down saves 314 tonnes of CO2!

Air pollution is also positively affected by glass recycling as it is reduced by 20% and water pollution by a massive 50%.

5) Glass Recycling Protects Our Countryside

Glass recycling conserves our countryside as it reduces the need to quarry more raw materials. By recycling instead of creating new glass, we save on the usage of materials such as sand, soda ash, limestone and colour additives. This in turn protects our landscapes and the natural habitats which exist all over the UK.

Each year 200,000 tonnes of glass is sent to landfill within the hospitality industry alone. This makes it all the more important to ensure that your glass waste is being disposed of responsibly.

A glass bottle you send to recycle can be re-made into a new product within 30 days. As glass is a primary material, your waste could be re-used to make an array of commercial use items such as bottles, jars, and tiles.

With KCM, it’s easy for you to recycle your commercial glass waste. You don’t have to segregate by colour or type. All glass waste collected will be brought back to our own recycling site in Rotherham. It will then be sorted and cleaned before being distributed to manufacturers to create new glass products.

We will provide you with the appropriate glass waste container for your site. We can arrange either weekly or ad-hoc collections, ensuring minimal disruption to your business.

We cover all areas surrounding Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Sheffield, Chesterfield and Worksop.

If you require any further information regarding our glass recycling service, please call our Trade Waste team directly on 01709 794 888 or email

household waste skip hire

8 Things to Consider When Hiring A Skip for Household Waste

By Skip Hire

Household waste is typically any rubbish that you wouldn’t put in your normal, small wheelie bin. Whether you’re about to begin a home renovation or just need a big clear-out, domestic skip hire can be the perfect way to dispose of the waste that you generate.

At KCM Waste Management, we are experts in waste disposal. We, therefore, offer a wide range of skips that are suitable for our domestic customers throughout South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.

If you’re thinking of hiring a skip for your household waste, however, then there are a number of things you should consider first:

household waste skip hire

1) Be Sure Domestic Skip Hire Is the Best Solution

First and foremost, you should make sure that a skip is definitely the best waste disposal solution for your household waste.

A skip is the perfect solution for waste removal if you’re likely to be generating messy waste over a number of days. For example, if you’re redesigning your garden or replacing your kitchen.

If you have various bulky items to dispose of such as sofas and beds, then you may find our man in a van service more favourable and cost-effective.

Likewise, if you have a great deal of waste ready to dispose of that needs removing straight away, then you may opt for our grab hire service. Our grab wagons can remove up to 17 tonnes of waste, which is the equivalent of more than 2 builders skips. These are also a good alternative if access to your property is an issue.

2) What Size Skip Do You Need?

Once you’ve decided that skip is the best choice, you need to pick which size to hire.

You don’t want your skip to be too big as you’ll be essentially paying for unused space. However, it’s crucial that you choose one that’s big enough for your waste, otherwise you may end up having to order another.

You should be sure that your waste can fit within your skip, and that it doesn’t exceed the height of the skip’s sides. Waste exceeding the load level limit is illegal and will result in your skip not being able to be collected.

For information on the sizes of skips available, take a look at our website here. Or for more information, just give us a call on 01709 361 144.

3) Do You Require A Permit for Domestic Skip Hire?

Many people are unaware that if you have a skip on a public road, then a permit from your local council is required.

At KCM, we like to take care of this process for you. As an authorised skip hire contractor within both South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, we can organise this with your local council.

If you have private land such as a driveway available then you don’t need to worry about this.

4) How Long Do You Require Your Skip?

When booking a skip, you need to decide on how long you’re likely to require it. You should also consider the type of service that would suit you best.

At KCM Waste Management, our skip hire service is available for 1 week as standard. However, if you require it for any longer, we can arrange this for just a small charge.

We also offer alternative skip hire services, such as exchange, wait and load and tip and return that may suit your project better.

5) Are You Ready for Your Skip?

For convenience and to save money, you should ensure you have waste ready for your skip before it’s delivered.

If your project isn’t ready to begin when your skip arrives, then you risk additional costs to keep your skip for longer.

At KCM Waste Management, we are generally able to provide our local customers with a next day delivery service. You can just check our availability on our online direct booking portal when you’re almost ready for it.

6) What Can You Put in Your Domestic Skip?

You’re able to put a huge range of items in your skip. From garden waste to small WEEE items. For a full list of items that you can put in a skip, take a look at our website here.

There are a few types of waste that can’t be disposed of in a general waste skip such as hazardous waste. If you’re unsure just give us a call and we can then recommend you an alternative household waste disposal service.

7) Are There Any Access Restrictions?

Your skip will be delivered on a skip wagon. These vehicles are wider and much heavier than a normal car. So it’s important to ensure that there’s enough room for it to fit down the road.

If your skip will be placed on your driveway, then you should also consider gate access. Also, make sure that there’ll be enough room to maneuver your car once it’s on.

8) Where Does Your Waste Go?

You want to feel secure that your waste won’t end up in landfill where it will damage the environment.

If you hire a skip with KCM Waste Management, then you can rest assured that your household waste will be disposed of in a way that won’t damage the environment. We will take it to our authorised waste transfer station in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, where at least 94% of it will be recycled.

Our competitively-priced domestic skip hire service is convenient for both small removals and full house clear-outs.

If you’re based within South Yorkshire or West Yorkshire and looking for domestic skip hire, then we’re here for you.

At KCM Waste Management, we have provided skips to our customers throughout Yorkshire for over 30 years.

Sand: Which Type is Right for Your Construction Project?

By Aggregates

When we think of sand within construction, we often don’t realise that there’s so much choice!

Sands are the finest types of aggregates available and have a wide variety of uses within the construction industry. In both domestic and commercial projects alike, sands, in general, can be used as a bulking and strengthening agent to create building materials. They can also be used for decorative purposes.

At KCM Waste Management, as well as being experts in waste management and disposal, we also offer a wide variety of recycled and primary aggregates, sands, gravels, and topsoil.

We are proud to be able to supply our commercial clients throughout South Yorkshire. Including major cities Rotherham, Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley, Chesterfield, Worksop, and more.

If you’re currently looking for materials for your next building project, you may be surprised to find out that different sands have slightly different uses. Therefore, we’ve decided to put together a helpful blog outlining the variations to help you make an informed decision:

sand tipper

Washed Building Sand

By terms of ‘washed’ we mean that the sand has all of the dust, clay, silt, and any other unwanted materials removed so that we have a pure product and is then left to drain.

Washed building sand is essential for mixing mortars as part of the initial construction stage. For builders, as the name suggests, this sand is mixed with water and cement for bricklaying.

The fine texture and small particles of washed building sand make it the perfect choice if you’re looking to create a smooth finish.

Being a multi-purpose product, it is also popular with plasterers and other trades alike. It is often used for a variety of other building projects including mortar pointing, and plastering.

Washed Concreting Sand

Also commonly referred to as sharp sand or paving sand, washed concrete sand is one of the most popular types of sands within the construction industry.

It is more coarse than washed building sand and is larger in size. Being a versatile product, it’s often used to provide a stable sub-base for laying slabs and block paving. It can also be used for screeding, making concrete based products, and for external rendering on buildings. Washed concreting sand is also very popular for creating patio or seating areas in your garden.

You would normally opt for this over washed building sand if you were looking for more strength and less flexibility.

Dry Screen Building Sand

With very fine particles, dry screen building sand is perfect for mixing to create mortar.

It can therefore be used for laying bricks, blocks, or stone. Due to its thickness, you would normally choose to use motar to build outdoor standalone structures such as walls.

Recycled Grit Sand

As you’d expect, grit sand is the thickest type of sand, and so is also slightly heavier.

It is often used in construction and in gardening products. Due to its drainage properties, it is particularly suited to areas that are prone to be exposed to water.

Recycled grit sand, therefore, creates an ideal subbase for floor screeds, block paving, flagstones, or artificial grass.

Whether you’ve got an upcoming one-off project, or whether you’re a builder looking for regular deliveries, KCM Waste Management can help you. We have a fleet of tipper vehicles available. This means we can provide an unrivaled delivery service direct to your commercial premises or building site.

We offer tipper hire on our vehicles that are able to carry up to 20 tonnes at a time, making them suitable for aggregates and sand deliveries. All of our tippers are maintained to the highest possible standard. Ensuring they are 100% site safe and that they perform at their peak level during the hire period you choose.

If you choose to, you are also able to collect a selection of our aggregates locally from our licensed facilities based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Just simply call ahead to check availability and we will sort the rest out for you.

If you require any further assistance in choosing the right aggregate for your project, then feel free to contact our experienced team. Alternatively, you can contact our aggregates manager directly on 07736 290 273.

Working with a professional waste management company such as KCM means your waste can be recycled and won’t end up in landfill where it will damage the environment by polluting the air and soil. This means that they can help reduce your carbon footprint, which is great for the environment as well as great for your reputation.

Our trade waste bins will also save you money! Landfill taxes are increasing dramatically, so recycling with our trade waste service has never been easier or cheaper.

2) Purchase & Work More Efficiently

Reduce the waste that your business generates by efficient purchasing and working!

It’s a great idea to keep a waste management log so that you’re able to see what you’re ordering, and what you’re wasting. From there you can review your monthly purchases to ensure you’re not over-spending and only purchasing the materials that you actually need.

In terms of buying, you could purchase merchandise and stock in bulk to avoid pointless monthly ordering. This could also help reduce the amount of waste that’s created from excess packaging.

If you’re based within commercial business premises such as an office, do you create and circulate electronic meeting documents, rather than print? Do you proactively promote recycling and encourage employees to recycle?

If you’re a public-facing business such as a restaurant, takeaway, or shop, when ordering stock do you ask suppliers to send with limited packaging? Do you have signage to encourage your customers to dispose of items in the correct way?

There are so many simple habits you could introduce to your workplace to help reduce your waste costs. If you need any help with this, then you can book a free consultation with KCM to discuss your needs and implement a waste management plan.

3) Implement Simple Recycling Procedures

Everyone at your business should do their bit to help recycle and reduce the amount of commercial waste you produce. Try small things to begin with such as implementing recycle bins within your canteen, and boxes for paper to be recycled.

Educate your team on the 3 Rs:

  • REDUCE – Do we need to have so much?
  • REUSE – Can this be used for something else, rather than wasted?
  • RECYCLE – If you can’t reuse it but it can be recycled, dispose of it in the correct location.

It’s important to also stay on top of the disposing of your confidential waste. If you let it build-up to the end of the year, then it can become a costly and stressful job.

At KCM, we provide our clients throughout South Yorkshire with either containers or recyclable bags for all of their secure documents.

We then recycle the remains of the shredded documents to be reused for a variety of purposes. We can schedule document collection as frequently as you need it or on an irregular, ad hoc basis.

At KCM Waste Management, we are clued up on the laws of trade waste. If your company produces commercial waste of any type, your duty of care to follow government standards means you must safely dispose of waste in a way that is not detrimental to the environment.

Our service as a registered waste carrier and our efforts to cater to our customers’ needs in this way not only benefit them financially but also benefits the environment. We have helped many different businesses significantly reduce their landfill costs and carbon footprints.

We are licensed by the environment agency to process your waste. All waste collected by us is processed at our transfer station in South Yorkshire. For a free quote for your trade waste needs, email us at or contact us.

We are passionate about waste disposal and recycling and believe that it should be easily accessible to everyone.

If you’re based within South Yorkshire or West Yorkshire, then here are 5 reasons why you should choose KCM for your next skip hire:

Having over 30 years’ experience means we are clued up on skips and the laws of waste management. We can advise you what exactly you’re able to put in your skip. If there’s something that you’re unable to put in a skip then we can recommend one of our different waste disposal services.

Many people are unaware that in order to have a skip outside your home that isn’t on a private space like your drive, then you need a council permit. Being an authorised skip hire contractor means that with KCM all you have to do is let us know where you’d like your skip leaving and then we can take care of the permit for you!

That means that you are able to completely rely on us, as you can see by our range of 5* customer reviews.

KCM are committed to being environmentally friendly and strongly believe that all waste should be put to good use.

We are extremely proud to currently recycle 94% of all the waste we receive and are working towards a zero-landfill policy.

All of the waste we collect is currently recycled locally at our licensed waste transfer station at our headquarters based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

To reduce the waste we send to landfill, we also turn a large amount of waste into biomass fuels or aggregates. These aggregates are then put to use mainly within the construction industry for building projects which you can learn more about here.
