How Much Is a Skip to Hire? Everything You Need to Know

If you’re wondering how much is a skip to hire for domestic or commercial purposes, there are a lot of things to consider.

The cost of a skip will depend on a number of factors including the size of the skip, how long you require the skip for, and of course your location, and where the skip will be placed.

You should also consider what you can and cannot put in a skip. If you are a commercial business or even if the skip is for domestic/residential use, there are strict guidelines as to what can be placed in skips.

Read on to find out more.

How Much Is a Skip to Hire?

As we mentioned above, there are lots of factors that will determine how much a skip will cost to hire.  We have broken down each important factor so that you can make the best decision before booking a skip online.

The Size

The size of your skip will of course influence the cost of skip hire charges. The smaller the skip, the smaller the fee. It’s important to have a good idea of how much waste you need to remove before booking a skip. Booking a skip too small, or even too big, could mean you are spending more than you need to.

For smaller residential and domestic jobs, a 3-yard skip holds around 25-35 bin bags to give you a good idea about capacity. A 4-yard skip holds around 30-40 bin bags. Our skip sizes go all the way up to 14-yard skips – these hold around 120-140 bin bags and are ideal for commercial purposes.

Your Location

Your location, the location of the skip hire firm, and the areas that they cover are one of the most important factors to consider.

You may find a skip for hire at a really cheap price. However, if you live far away from the skip hire yard then you’ll likely incur extra delivery costs.

At KCM our skip hire service is nationwide, and you can get accurate, real-time costs for your exact location simply by entering your postcode on our booking platform. This takes all the guesswork out of the cost for your skip and means no hidden costs.

The Length of Hire

At KCM, you can keep your skip for 1 week as standard to ensure you have plenty of time to complete the task at hand. For a small additional fee, you can of course extend that time frame.

If you aren’t booking with us, we recommend that you check the length of time you can have your skip as this can range from company to company. The cost of extending that period will of course range from company to company also.

Permit Requirements

It’s a little-known fact that licenses are required in the UK to hire skips. If you are hiring a skip and don’t have a privately owned driveway or yard big enough to hold a skip, then it is likely that this will need to be placed on a public pavement/road.

To allow a skip to be placed on public property, a permit is required  Fortunately, at KCM we can handle this for you with the local authority if required. Permits can of course incur additional fees and it is important to check with your chosen company who will take ownership for implementing that permit.

Access Restrictions

Something that is often overlooked is the fact that skips are delivered usually on very large 7.5-tonne HGV lorries. These are wider than a car and therefore require suitable access to be in a position to safely deliver and retrieve a skip.

Before booking a skip, if you have a narrow drive or narrow gate access, it is a good idea to check with the skip hire company beforehand so that they can confirm that they can access your property. This will save you money and time in the long run!

Type of Waste

When hiring a skip, it’s important to check with the skip hire company what can and cannot be placed in their skips.

For example, at KCM the following items cannot be placed in our skips:

  • Commercial paints and solvents
  • Mattresses
  • Tyres
  • Fridges and freezers
  • Asbestos
  • Large electrical items
  • Clinical waste
  • Hot ash
  • Hazardous waste
  • Gas cylinders
  • Flourescent tubes
  • Batteries oil
  • Petrol and diesel
  • Explosives
  • Excessive food waste
