At KCM, we’re mostly notably known for our skip hire services. The purpose of hiring a skip is to enable lots of waste and rubbish to be safely and conveniently stored and removed in one collection.
However, there are lots of reasons why a skip may not be the right solution for your waste management needs. When you’re renovating your home, having a clear out, or have another messy project that produces a lot of waste – your first thought may be to hire a skip, but this may not be suitable for every task.
When Is Skip Hire the Right Solution?
Skip hire can be the most convenient and efficient way to remove bulk waste in many situations. However, there are occasions when hiring a skip may not be time or cost-effective.
If you simply have a few bulky items that need removing, the cost of hiring a skip may not be the most cost-effective solution. If you have certain types of waste that have to be contained and recycled in a specific way or have waste that is considered hazardous, then again, skip hire is not appropriate.
Skip hire is most suited for property renovations, garden projects, commercial uses such as office clearances, shop fitting, and construction use – essentially anywhere where a lot of waste will be produced and needs to be removed.
What Are The Alternatives to Skip Hire?
If skip hire isn’t the most suitable option for your waste removal needs, there are lots of other services available as alternatives to skip hire which can be both time and cost-effective and more suitable for your project needs.
Man in a Van
We have all heard of a ‘man and van’ service and it is essentially just that! A man with a van who can attend to your property to remove large bulky items and take them to be recycled. This could be anything from old bed frames, wardrobes, broken furniture, sofas etc.
These items would likely fill a skip and cross the height restrictions which would make it unsafe for the skip to be removed. Hiring a man with a van to remove these items would be far cheaper and quicker to remove.
Confidential Waste Disposal
Confidential waste should be disposed of appropriately. This should never be placed in a skip in a ‘public area’.
It is important therefore that confidential waste is separated from general waste and collected by professional and licenced companies who will remove and destroy your confidential waste.
Hazardous Waste Disposal
Items such as vehicle batteries, paints, solvents, pesticides, compressed gas tanks and medical waste are all considered to be hazardous materials.
These materials (and more) cannot and must not ever be placed in skips. They must be removed by professional, qualified and fully licenced specialists such as KCM.
WEEE Waste Disposal
Items such as vacuum cleaners, small household appliances, computers, televisions etc are considered to be WEEE waste. Again, these items should not be placed in a skip.
They must be collected by WEEE waste collections specialists who hold the appropriate licences to ensure that they are disposed of in line with WEEE regulations.
Tipper Hire
Tipper Hire is a great alternative to skip hire where there are a lot of natural materials and garden waste that needs collecting and recycling.
It can be more cost-effective and more suitable when moving large amounts of excavated soil for example.
Scrap Metal Removal
You can of course dispose of scrap metal in a skip. However, it may be far more cost-effective to have this collected by a scrap metal dealer who may be able to sell the metal on your behalf.
Metals can be melted down and reused so the ideal way to dispose of them is with a licenced scrap metal dealer.
