KCM Waste Management are proud to partner with and support Rotherham United Football Club in their latest recycling campaign!
In an effort to make the club more environmentally friendly and create a more sustainable environment, RUFC are now collecting all single-use plastic bottles in their KCM bins both pitch side and in the changing rooms.
This initiative comes at a time where fans are looking towards re-opening football stadiums and how they are planning to tackle to issue of recycling after games. Find out more below:
Our Commitment to Our Local Community
As a local, family-run company, we make giving back to our local Rotherham community a priority.
Growing up in the town that our business is now operating in means we have a personal connection with our community. Sponsoring local sports teams, equestrian riders and litter pickers are only the beginning of our sponsorship work.
We sponsor a number of youth football teams. And do continuous pro forma work for local community sports grounds and centres.
On top of this, we actively fundraise for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Raising money with the help of our customers and suppliers. We are delighted to have raised over £5,000 for the hospital so far.
Our Recycling Campaign With RUFC
Our latest recycling campaign with Rotherham United Football club sees all single-use plastic water bottles being collected from the changing rooms and pitchside after each game. These are bagged up and brought directly to us at KCM Waste Management to be recycled and reused.
Since December 2020, around 1200 bottles have already been collected and recycled!
This campaign is only expected to go from strength to strength once stadiums are able to open back up to fans. As the waste management partner of the ground, we have recently conducted site assessments to ensure bins are readily available and accessible throughout the ground.
This will also be re-assessed once we are given a re-opening date. We want to make sure recycling is as easy for the fans as possible.
The Importance of a Recycling Campaign at Football Stadiums
Football stadiums have the potential to create tonnes and tonnes of landfill every single year.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average football game creates at least 100 tonnes of waste. As some stadiums now have the capacity to seat over 100,000 people (almost an entire city!), not recycling is leading to a disastrous impact on the environment.
In 2018, the World Cup in Russia produced 3.2 million cups of beer alone!
Large events like this make organisers more aware of the environmental impacts that games hold. Creating a greener waste disposal plan can even save owners a decent amount of money in the long run! As recycling tends to be a cheaper option than general waste disposal.
The influence this then has over the fans visiting the ground has an invaluable impact.
Looking towards the postponed Euro 2020 next year, both the European Commission and UEFA are investigating new initiatives to make the tournament more sustainable.
Other ideas to make football stadiums greener include lower energy usage lighting systems and reusing rainwater to water the pitch.
The KCM and RUFC Partnership
As stand sponsors of The Miller’s New York Stadium for over 12 years, we are proud to support and assist the club in this and all future recycling initiatives.
We were delighted to hear of RUFC and Rotherham United Community Sports Trust’s concern for the amount of plastic that isn’t currently being recycled. This new initiative means we are able to remove, recycle and reuse single-use plastics that are discarded on match days.
However, our partnership goes beyond rubbish! We advertise KCM in multiple locations around the stadium. And even took part in Rotherham United’s first LED signage display.
Sponsoring the academy kit is also something we have been proud to be a part of since the 2016/2017 season.
From being both fans and business sponsors, we are proud to be longstanding partners of our local football club.
