What is Hazardous Waste & How Should I Dispose of it?

We’ve all heard of hazardous waste. But what exactly it includes can be more than you probably expect!

It includes absolutely anything that can be harmful to either people or the environment once disposed of. Many businesses create hazardous waste without even realising it! Everything from batteries to ink cartridges needs to be disposed of in line with hazardous regulations.

Getting your waste disposed of properly is quite simple. Most waste management companies will provide a quote for your removal completely free of charge.

KCM will even help you classify your waste so you know what you need a quote for beforehand.

It’s important for both the environment and the safety of your staff that your hazardous waste is treated properly and safely.

What are the Different Types?

Asbestos – a common building material used during the building boom of 1950-1980. Now banned in building in the UK, asbestos is extremely dangerous to your health if removed without wearing the correct PPE and must be bagged up securely.

Chemicals – something you may not always expect to be found at your place of work. Items such as brake fluid or print toner are very common, depending on your line of work.

Batteries – easily found in both homes and workplaces. No matter the shape or size, batteries must be disposed of safely and legally.

Solvents – used to dissolve other substances and can be extremely dangerous if not handled properly. Examples include ethanol, methanol and acetone.

Pesticides – Pesticides are used to control different pests and disease carriers. As pesticides are toxic chemical, they can easily contaminate the air, ground and water if not disposed of properly.

Oils (except edible ones) – such as car oil and even some essential oils. Even items contaminated with oil like filters and rags are classed as hazardous waste.

Equipment containing ozone depleting substances – commonly found in homes and businesses. Items like fridges contain substances such as chlorofluorocarbons, halon and carbon tetrachloride. These chemicals can destroy the Earth’s ozone layer.

Hazardous waste containers – anything that has been used to store or move it then becomes hazardous due to contamination.

How to Check If Your Waste Is Hazardous?

If you are unsure, you can always contact a waste management company that will be able to provide some advice.

Can I Dispose of Hazardous Waste Myself?

It must be disposed of at a registered hazardous waste disposal facility. However, you are responsible for ensuring it is disposed of safely and legally. Any waste management company must provide you with a duty of care to prove you have done this.

How to Find Hazardous Waste Disposal Services

Finding a reputable hazardous waste disposal company can sometimes be challenging.

Non-compliance with health and safety laws can cause serious harm to both people and the environment so it is imperative that you do dispose of your hazardous waste through a qualified company.

The best way to find a hazardous waste disposal service is by speaking to the waste service provider you already use. Or ask them for their recommendation.

You should also make sure you check Trust Pilot reviews. Reviews left by previous customers will give you a clear understanding of how reliable and trustworthy the company is!
