Our Guide to Home DIY Projects During Lockdown 3.0

By Skip Hire

As we try to cope with another national lockdown, many people are looking to home DIY projects to give them a focus and to help pass the time (or to give them a much-needed breather from home-schooling!)

In fact, there’s actually been a 489% increase in online searches relating to home DIY projects since the start of the pandemic, in comparison to the previous year.

If you’re thinking about investing in a home DIY project during lockdown, take a look at our guide for everything you need to know:

Why Invest in a Home DIY Lockdown Project?

Aside from relieving boredom, turning to DIY during this time also has a great number of benefits.

You can finally get all of those jobs ticked off your list, and it’s a chance for you to really think outside the box and get creative with your home.

Most importantly, having a project to focus on can do wonders for both our mental and physical health.

What Are the Most Popular Lockdown Projects in 2021?

We really saw a huge uplift in people getting creative at home throughout Lockdown 1 and 2 – with some amazing projects completed!

So what can we expect to see during Lockdown 3?

Re-vamp Your Home Office Space

If you’ve been working from home for a while now, transforming your home working space can give you a real boost!

Investing in this space can really help turn it into a positive place for you. And having a home office that you’re happy with can also help you stay focused and feel more productive.

Without your usual morning commute, and without as much to do in your free time – you’re probably also finding yourself with a lot more time on your hands. So this can also be a great way to make the most of that.

Get the Garden Ready for Summer

Summer at home is perhaps looking like a favourable choice for a lot of us again this year. So if you’re lucky enough to have a garden, then now is the perfect time to really make the most out of your outdoor space!

It could be just the simple addition of extra plants or a decking area, or maybe you could invest in a full garden revamp.

Any time spent outside can really break up your day and is something that can be done with the whole family. Getting out in the fresh air will also be great for your health during this time.

Re-decorate the Home

Tired of the same old dull wallpaper or paint? If you’ve been putting off decorating for a while now, now is as good a time as any!

Even just re-arranging the furniture, or adding a few decorative new accessories can make a huge difference.

Have a Clear Out

Now is the perfect time to get rid of all that unwanted clutter!

Whether it’s messy kitchen cupboards or an overflowing wardrobe – spend some time clearing out everything you don’t want and start afresh.

Having a clear space can also really help with your mental health and can be a great way to de-stress and re-focus.

Get Creative with Upcycling

Upcycling can be a great way to really get those creative juices flowing!

Making amazing garden furniture and accessories out of leftover wooden pallets has been one of the most popular creations so far. Here are some of our favourites.

We’ve also seen lots of people get creative with home DIY panelling this year, which is a great, low-budget option to add a luxurious feel to your home.

Where to Find Skip Hire in South & West Yorkshire

By Skip Hire

If you are looking to hire a skip in and around South and West Yorkshire, it can sometimes be hard to know where to begin!

When disposing of waste, whether it is domestic or commercial, it is your responsibility to ensure this is disposed of both safely and responsibly. Many cheaper skip hire companies do not have the correct licensing to transfer waste and therefore, will end up fly tipping your waste.

With so many companies offering skip hire at reasonable rates, it is important that you choose an experienced, reliable, and environmentally friendly business.

At KCM Waste Management, we’re experts when it comes to skips and recycling. So, we have outlined a simple guide to hiring a skip for your project in South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire:

How Do I Know If A Skip Hire Company Covers My Area?

The vast majority of skip hire companies will now offer an online direct booking portal where you are able to enter the postcode of your site to check they service your area and for what price.

You can check your postcode on KCM’s online booking here.

Alternatively, you can call the company directly to query any site address. Usually, if the company doesn’t cover an area themselves, then they can recommend a reliable local alternative!

How Do I Choose A Reliable Skip Hire Company?

There are a few ways to find a skip hire company that is both reliable and experienced.

Asking for recommendations from family and friends can be a great start to your search. But the below methods will ensure you have made the best choice.

Check Review Sites

There are numerous review sites that can help provide real experiences from previous customers.

Checking reviews is usually the best way to ensure you are hiring from a reliable and professional business. If a company does not post their reviews or feature on other reviewing platforms, this can be a bad sign.

Take a look at KCM Waste Management’s TrustPilot reviews here: https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/kcmwaste.com

Do Your Own Research

It is beneficial to yourself to conduct your own research when looking for a new skip hire company.

All companies should be willing to provide their waste license number and all other relevant accreditations. A waste license is provided by The Environmental Agency and is a legal requirement of any waste carrier or site.

Any reputable skip hire company will have this readily available to provide. Along with a full explanation as to where your waste goes and how exactly it is recycled.

Find an Environmentally Conscientious Company

Particularly in this day and age, it is very important that whichever company you choose to hire from is environmentally friendly. They should be committed to recycling as much of their waste as possible. And most importantly, not just sending it to landfill.

You may not be producing enough waste to warrant having a different skip for each waste stream. So you should be able to rely on your skip hire provider to sort through the contents and recycle accordingly.

Here at KCM Waste Management, we are proud to be a zero-to-landfill site. We work extremely hard to ensure we recycle as much as we possibly can.

By using KCM Skip Hire, you are safe in the knowledge that all waste collected is brought back to our fully licensed site to be recycled, and not tipped elsewhere. Every single skip and bin brought back to our site is hand sorted to ensure all that can possibly be recycled is separated and processed.

Ensure They Are Experienced

As with any service you use, it is essential that you find an experienced company for your skip hire. This will ensure the process is as smooth as possible. And that the company is able to provide expert advice, no matter the query.

If you are unsure of what type of waste you have or which skip size would be best suited, our expert office team are more than happy to help.

With an experienced company, you know you will be receiving the skip most appropriate for your waste and it will arrive when you expect it to.

Commercial Skip Hire: Our Top Tips

By Skip Hire

As a business, commercial skip hire can be a great, cost-effective solution to help dispose of your waste.

Whether you’re planning a New Year office clear-out, or revamping a restaurant, you are likely producing huge volumes of waste. So ensuring your waste is disposed of safely and in an environmentally friendly way is crucial.

Hiring a skip can cause a few headaches if it’s something that you haven’t done before. So if you’re looking to hire a skip for your business, here are some of our top tips:

Choose A Skip Supplier That Covers Nationwide!

Although our headquarters is based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, we actually offer nationwide coverage!

Does your business produce waste over multiple locations? Or perhaps you’re a construction-related business that regularly works across various sites throughout the Nation?

If so, choosing a commercial skip hire supplier that covers nationwide takes all of the hassle out of it for you! Rather than trying to find multiple skip suppliers in various locations, working with just one nationwide supplier means we can organise all of the delivery and collections for you.

It also means that you only have to have one account open with a skip supplier. And you have just one point of contact, no matter where you are in the UK.

At KCM, we work with only the most reputable suppliers throughout the nation. So if you’re looking for nationwide skip hire, get in touch with us for a full quote.

Choose the Correct Commercial Skip Size

When ordering your skip, it’s handy and commercially valuable to ensure you hire the right size. You don’t want to order one that’s too big as you could essentially be paying for empty space.

However, hiring a skip that’s too small could mean you then have to order another. This will then end up costing you more. And it could also result in very costly delays to your project.

At KCM, we offer commercial skips in a wide range of sizes. Our commercial customers normally opt for one of our larger sized skips, such as an 8 tonne, 12-yard, 14-yard, or 16-yard skip. Or you may choose a roll on roll off skip, which are heavy-duty and can hold up to 440 bin bags.

You can view our full range of skip sizes with more information about each here.

Load Your Skip Efficiently

Once your skip arrives, you could save space and money by getting a plan together of the most efficient way to load it.

You should load the heaviest or biggest items first. That way, smaller items can fit into the gaps to ensure it’s filled as condensed as possible.

Consider Access and Location for Your Skip

If you require a commercial skip at a busy construction site or similar, then checking of any access restrictions with the site management is crucial.

Likewise, if your skip will be placed at your commercial premises itself, then you should ensure that it can be in a position where it won’t block access for any neighbours or visitors.

Skips should be placed in a location where there is minimal disruption to other vehicles coming in and out. But it will obviously also need to be placed as close to your business premises as possible to ensure that it can be loaded easily.

Check if You Require a Skip Permit

Don’t forget that you may need council permission to have a skip. If your skip will be placed on private property such as your business premises or a driveway then this won’t be needed.

However, if you’re looking to place it on any public space such as a road then you will require a permit from the local council.

At KCM, we take care of all of this for you on your behalf.

Check the Types of Waste That Can Be Put in a Skip

In general, there are just a small number of items that can’t be put in a skip. Depending on the type of industry your business is in, you should be aware of any restrictions that may affect you.

The main restricted commercial items are hazardous waste, paints and solvents, clinical items, excessive food waste, asbestos, and large electrical items. A full list can be found here.

You can also find a full list of all the types of waste that are able to be disposed of in a skip on our website.

Decide the Best Commercial Skip Hire Collection Service for you

It’s important to think about how long you require your skip for. And also the service that would work best for you.

Most businesses opt for an exchange service. Whereby the driver leaves your skip with you for a certain period of time to allow you to dispose of your waste as it builds up.

If you require a skip at a busy site, then you may decide a wait and load service would be best. This is when the driver drops the skip off, waits 30 minutes for you to fill it, and then takes it straight back away for you. This could be a great option if space is an issue. It also prevents any risk of fly-tipping.

Similarly, rather than ordering multiple skips, a cost-effective option is the tip and return service. This involves the driver delivering your skip. Then returning it back to the site to empty it and then bringing it back for you to re-use again. This is a good option if you have a large amount of waste to dispose of within a short period of time.

Choosing KCM for Your Commercial Skip Hire

With over 30 years’ experience in skip hire, we’re very proud to have built a fantastic reputation within South Yorkshire and throughout the nation.

Choosing KCM is also an environmentally conscious choice. We are proud to recycle 94% of the waste we collect. And we’re committed to operating as a zero-to-landfill waste centre.

Are you interested in commercial skip hire for your business? If so, get in touch with our team on 01709 361 144 or you can request to book your skip, here.

different skip sizes

Choosing the Right Skip Size for Your Project

By Skip Hire

Here at KCM Waste Management, we offer a variety of skip sizes, from a 3 tonne all the way up to a 40-yard roll on roll off.

To decide which size skip you need, you need to have a good estimate of how much waste your project will be producing.

Our Skip Sizes

Selecting the right size skip for your waste is crucial in ensuring you aren’t wasting money on your skip! Take a look at our guide below to help choose which size skip would be best suited:

3 Tonne or 4 Tonne Skip Sizes:

For small amounts of waste, you would need to look at around a 3 tonne or 4 tonne.

A 3 tonne skip can hold between 25-35 black bin bags and a 4 tonne can hold 30-40 bin bags.

This size is most suited for small home projects or garden renovations.

6 Tonne or 8 Tonne Skip Sizes:

For a larger amount or for builder’s rubble, we would recommend a 6 tonne or 8 tonne.

These are most commonly used for construction projects or larger home projects.

A 6 tonne skip can hold 50-60 bin bags and an 8 tonne will hold 60-80 bin bags.

12 Yard, 14 Yard, or 16 Yard Skip Sizes:

Our larger skip sizes include 12 yard, 14 yard and 16 yard. These can be best suited for larger garden renovations or refurbishment projects like shop fitting. A 12 yard skip holds 100-120 bin bags, a 14 yard would hold 120-140 bin bags, and a 16 yard 140-160 bin bags.

The next size up from this would be a roll on roll off skip bin which is suitable for bulky waste or very large amounts. These range from a 20 yard to a 40 yard.

Roll on roll offs are best suited to industrial or commercial waste removal projects, they are heavy-duty skip bins and can hold up to 440 bin bags.

Considering Your Skip Location

To hire a skip you must ensure you have the space to have this on site.

If your skip is going to be placed on private land such as a driveway or front garden, then we can drop this off for you without requiring a council permit.

If you need to have your skip left on public land, such as a road outside your house, you will require a council permit. Here at KCM, we arrange all of this for you so that once you have booked your skip, you don’t have the hassle of trying to acquire a permit yourself! It will all be arranged and ready for your delivery date.

We would recommend allowing at least 9 foot of width for our skip lorries to be able to deliver your skip safely!

8 Things to Consider When Hiring A Skip for Household Waste

By Skip Hire

Household waste is typically any rubbish that you wouldn’t put in your normal, small wheelie bin. Whether you’re about to begin a home renovation or just need a big clear-out, domestic skip hire can be the perfect way to dispose of the waste that you generate.

At KCM Waste Management, we are experts in waste disposal. We, therefore, offer a wide range of skips that are suitable for our domestic customers throughout South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.

If you’re thinking of hiring a skip for your household waste, however, then there are a number of things you should consider first:

household waste skip hire

1) Be Sure Domestic Skip Hire Is the Best Solution

First and foremost, you should make sure that a skip is definitely the best waste disposal solution for your household waste.

A skip is the perfect solution for waste removal if you’re likely to be generating messy waste over a number of days. For example, if you’re redesigning your garden or replacing your kitchen.

If you have various bulky items to dispose of such as sofas and beds, then you may find our man in a van service more favourable and cost-effective.

Likewise, if you have a great deal of waste ready to dispose of that needs removing straight away, then you may opt for our grab hire service. Our grab wagons can remove up to 17 tonnes of waste, which is the equivalent of more than 2 builders skips. These are also a good alternative if access to your property is an issue.

2) What Size Skip Do You Need?

Once you’ve decided that skip is the best choice, you need to pick which size to hire.

You don’t want your skip to be too big as you’ll be essentially paying for unused space. However, it’s crucial that you choose one that’s big enough for your waste, otherwise you may end up having to order another.

You should be sure that your waste can fit within your skip, and that it doesn’t exceed the height of the skip’s sides. Waste exceeding the load level limit is illegal and will result in your skip not being able to be collected.

For information on the sizes of skips available, take a look at our website here. Or for more information, just give us a call on 01709 361 144.

3) Do You Require A Permit for Domestic Skip Hire?

Many people are unaware that if you have a skip on a public road, then a permit from your local council is required.

At KCM, we like to take care of this process for you. As an authorised skip hire contractor within both South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, we can organise this with your local council.

If you have private land such as a driveway available then you don’t need to worry about this.

4) How Long Do You Require Your Skip?

When booking a skip, you need to decide on how long you’re likely to require it. You should also consider the type of service that would suit you best.

At KCM Waste Management, our skip hire service is available for 1 week as standard. However, if you require it for any longer, we can arrange this for just a small charge.

We also offer alternative skip hire services, such as exchange, wait and load and tip and return that may suit your project better.

5) Are You Ready for Your Skip?

For convenience and to save money, you should ensure you have waste ready for your skip before it’s delivered.

If your project isn’t ready to begin when your skip arrives, then you risk additional costs to keep your skip for longer.

At KCM Waste Management, we are generally able to provide our local customers with a next day delivery service. You can just check our availability on our online direct booking portal when you’re almost ready for it.

6) What Can You Put in Your Domestic Skip?

You’re able to put a huge range of items in your skip. From garden waste to small WEEE items. For a full list of items that you can put in a skip, take a look at our website here.

There are a few types of waste that can’t be disposed of in a general waste skip such as hazardous waste. If you’re unsure just give us a call and we can then recommend you an alternative household waste disposal service.

7) Are There Any Access Restrictions?

Your skip will be delivered on a skip wagon. These vehicles are wider and much heavier than a normal car. So it’s important to ensure that there’s enough room for it to fit down the road.

If your skip will be placed on your driveway, then you should also consider gate access. Also, make sure that there’ll be enough room to maneuver your car once it’s on.

8) Where Does Your Waste Go?

You want to feel secure that your waste won’t end up in landfill where it will damage the environment.

If you hire a skip with KCM Waste Management, then you can rest assured that your household waste will be disposed of in a way that won’t damage the environment. We will take it to our authorised waste transfer station in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, where at least 94% of it will be recycled.

Our competitively-priced domestic skip hire service is convenient for both small removals and full house clear-outs.

If you’re based within South Yorkshire or West Yorkshire and looking for domestic skip hire, then we’re here for you.

At our own waste recycling site in Rotherham, we recycle all the waste we possibly can. We also ensure our partnered sites follow the same protocol so no matter where you are in the UK, you can expect the same high level of service that you expect from KCM.

We even consider the routes our drivers take and at what times of the day to ensure no excess fuel is being wasted and we are having as low a carbon footprint as possible.

Our West Yorkshire Skip Hire Service Is Flexible

Our new West Yorkshire skip service offers an expansion on skip hire options! If you don’t want a skip sat on your property, we can bring a skip to you, allow you time to fill it and then take away at the same time.

Our same day collection service will allow you the full day to fill your skip before we come and collect the very same day. This allows you more flexibility with the time available to fill your skip but you can still have your waste removed as soon as possible.

An exchange service is also very popular for large amounts of waste. We would deliver a KCM skip at a time most convenient to you, allow you as much time as required to fill this, and then bring a new skip for you as soon as your first one is filled. This means you are no longer waiting around for a new skip to be delivered and your project can continue without any disruption.
